HMRC’s Dedicated line for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax for Agents

HMRC’s advisers on the Agent Dedicated Line are available to assist agents with queries.

Agents will hear the following recorded message:

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is a new way for sole traders and landlords to report their income and expenses to HMRC. From April 2026, sole traders and landlords must use it if their income from self-employment and property combined is over £50,000. To get started, go to gov.uk and search ‘MTD for Income Tax Agent Step by Step’.

There will be an option to press 3 to access the MTD dedicated team.

Agents can also contact HMRC through the agent webchat to discuss an MTD query. If the query is considered too complex to discuss over webchat, the agent will be offered a callback.

On Wednesday 4 March, HMRC have activated a new text message service for agents contacting them by mobile phone.

Where agents contact HMRC via a mobile phone, the system will now recognise their number and present an option to send a single SMS with a link directing them to the MTD agent toolkit and outreach support service: Get ready for MTD: an agent toolkit - Guidance - GOV.UK "
