Submit Quarterly updates for Landlords and Sole Traders to HMRC

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD for ITSA) requires businesses and landlords with qualifying income to maintain digital records and update HMRC each quarter.

Threshold for submitting Quarterly updates

MTD ITSA applies based on gross income before expenses, with mandatory compliance for those whose combined self-employment and property income exceeds the relevant threshold as set by HMRC. The threshold is as under

Phase 1
Starting From:
06 April 2026
Mandatory Threshold
£ 50,000
Combined gross income before expenses

Covers self-employed individuals and landlords who exceed £50,000 in qualifying receipts.

Phase 2
Starting From:
06 April 2027
Mandatory Threshold
£ 30,000
Combined gross income before expenses

Threshold lowers. All matching entities exceeding £30,000 are brought fully into scope.

Phase 3
Starting From:
06 April 2028
Mandatory Threshold
£ 20,000
Combined gross income before expenses

Final rollout phase bringing additional sole traders and landlords into scope.
